David Hewlett-Rodney McKay WIP by WolfenM David Hewlett-Rodney McKay WIP by WolfenM
Drawing of actor David Hewlett, aka Stargate Atlantis's Rodney McKay. I was totally blown away bythe episode "Tao of Rodney" -- I liked Rodney before, but that ep cinched my adoration! And then my art muse, La, wouldn't leave me alone, and the writing muse, Maer, was too scattered to fight her off, so there we are. Never mind the fact that I have other *art* I'm supposed to be doing instead, too. *sigh* I'll be posting the finished versions in a minute -- it's just that you can see the linework better in this one. XD

See the completed black & white version here: [link]

See the completed colour version here: [link]

Done with an H pencil. Find the photo ref used in David's IMDB gallery.

Rodney McKay © MGM, David Hewlett © himself, drawing done by me, but the photographer holds the copyright to the original image it's based on.

Simple and great!
I just happened to have watched the episode "Tao of Rodney" too, today :XD:
I really like his character as well.

I like the completed black/white version more than the coloured one, though!

I think I agree with Cryo, It would have been nice to see this finished in pencil, but one can't help but put their Wacom Tablet to good use... am I right? :P

Lovely! In fact, of the three versions you posted, this one is my fav. The pencil shading is subtle and well-balanced, and suits the portrait well.

I really like how you've captured the light in his eyes and the shape of his eyebrows. Very nice.

Thanks very much! Coming from an artist of your caliber, that's quite a compliment! #^^#

 the pencil, it's sooo subtle. I've seen this photo done as a cross-stitch piece () and painted a few times, too. This is definitely the best version I've seen.
I think maybe the shadow is a little too defined on the left side of the picture-the problem with drawing DH is that he *doesn't* have a firm jawline and depending on the lighting, Rodney can look a bit pudgy!:giggle:You have to pick the shot you use carefully!
Have :+fav: this and the colour version :D
